This renewable energy asset near Sittingbourne consists of 20,000 solar panels, producing enough carbon free energy to power around 1,725 homes. It has been successfully supplying the national grid since 2016 and in December 2023 it was brought into community ownership via a successful fundraise.
The site is shared with Orchard Community Energy which owns the adjacent Orchard Solar Farm.
The solar farms are built on grazing land that was previously used for brick extraction.
KCE and OCE are dedicated to improving the biodiversity of the site. We have an improvement plan and a budget for the work that has been grant-funded by Power to Change.
Over the next 20 years we anticipate this 5MW project will generate around £2M of community benefit fund which will support sustainable energy initiatives across the whole Kent County Council area.
Orchard’s beneficiary area covers Medway and the Swale area; KCE covers the rest of Kent.
